MPs: Exclusion of Dr. Mutlaq illegitimises Iraqi elections PDF Print E-mail

PRESS RELEASE

ImageThe British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom, which has the backing of a majority of MPs and 200 Peers, is extremely disturbed by reports of the sudden exclusion by a governmental committee of Dr. Saleh Mutlaq as a candidate in the Iraqi Parliamentary elections. The current Iraqi regime is too much under the influence of the Iranian regime, and this is the result.

Today the nationwide uprising by Iranian people has shaken the clerical regime ruling Iran. One of the demands of the people is for free and fair elections to be held under UN supervision, and this contradicts the very principles of this regime. Under such circumstances, the regime must under no circumstances be allowed to impose its model in Iraq. The main winners of a free election would be the Iraqi people and the main loser would be the Iranian regime, since such an election would reduce its influence over Iraq.

We urge the Iraqi government and the Iraqi government committee to correct this great mistake. We reiterate that the exclusion of Dr. Mutlaq and other democratic forces would leave the election with no legitimacy and would risk taking Iraq down a bleak and violent path. This anti-democratic action only tends to show the dependence of the current Iraqi Prime Minister and government on the Iranian regime.
