The Iranian regime’s judiciary has sentenced six political prisoners to death following months of torture and unlawful detention, on charges of membership in the PMOI.

These individuals have been subjected to inhumane treatment, with the regime accusing them of politically motivated charges such as “conspiracy to undermine national security,” “rebellion against the state” and “forming a group to disrupt national stability”.

The charges brought against these individuals, such as “conspiracy against the state” are commonly used by the Iranian authorities to justify the detention and execution of individuals who oppose the regime or express dissenting views.

The following individuals are at risk of execution:

Pouya Ghobadi (32), an electrical engineer, was arrested in March 2024.

Vahid Bani-Amrian (32), a management graduate, was arrested in January 2024.

Babak Alipour (33), a law graduate, was arrested in January 2024.

Ali Akbar Daneshvarkar (57), a civil engineer, was arrested in January 2024.

Mohammad Taghavi (58), a political prisoner from the 1980s and 1990s, was arrested in 2020 and served three years in prison for the same charge.

Abolhassan Montazer (65), an architect and political activist, was detained once again in January 2024 and suffers from severe health conditions. His deteriorating health has not been given adequate medical attention while in custody.

The death sentences for these six individuals highlights the regime’s continued crackdown on political dissidents and is clear evidence of the regime’s systematic repression.

The Iranian regime, under the leadership of Ali Khamenei, continues its brutal crackdown on those who oppose its oppressive rule. Khamenei has resorted to executing activists and dissidents in a desperate attempt to stifle resistance. Despite these efforts, the youth of Iran remain resolute, and the fight for justice, freedom, and democracy continues to gain momentum.

The international community has a moral obligation to stand in solidarity with the people of Iran and demand an end to the regime’s systemic violations of human rights. The lives of these prisoners are at risk, and their survival depends on the swift and unified response of global institutions. It is critical that world leaders raise their voices in defence of these individuals and take concrete steps to ensure their safety and freedom.

The British Committee for Iran Freedom (BCFIF) calls on the international community, including the United Nations Security Council, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Human Rights Council, and other relevant UN bodies, to take immediate and decisive action to prevent the execution of these political prisoners. We also urge the European Union and its member states to exert pressure on the Iranian regime to halt these executions and secure the release of all political prisoners.

The international community must act now to protect these individuals and bring attention to the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran.
