The British Committee for Iran Freedom is saddened and appalled by the attempted assassination of the Spanish politician and former Vice-President of the European Parliament, Dr Alejo Vidal-Quadras, in Madrid yesterday.

We wish Dr Vidal-Quadras a swift recovery and express our solidarity with his family.

We strongly condemn this terrorist attack and support calls for an immediate investigation to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.

The British Committee for Iran Freedom worked with Dr Vidal-Quadras in securing the safe resettlement of the members of Iranian democratic opposition, the PMOI, in Albania and in advancing the cause of freedom, democracy and human rights in Iran.

Dr Vidal-Quadras is a great friend of the Iranian people, their popular resistance movement, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and its president-elect, Mrs Maryam Rajavi.

He stood by the Iranian people and the NCRI in their global campaign for justice and for holding Tehran to account for its repression and terrorism.

Dr Vidal-Quadras championed the call for the EU and European leaders to adopt a firm policy on Iran that recognises the Iranian people’s fight for a free, secular, and democratic republic, which had drawn the ire of the Iranian regime and led to his being placed on Tehran’s sanction and terrorist list.
