The British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom says the international community is not doing enough to support the Iranian people's nationwide uprising for freedom and regime change.
Tens of thousands protested in Tehran and elsewhere on 9 July despite a severe government clampdown. They chanted "death to the dictator" and "death to the deceitful government". The authorities failed to extinguish popular protests. Following the sham Presidential election in Iran, millions have taken part in protests demanding regime change.
The regime has savagely killed over 200 protestors and injured or arrested thousands of others.
The Group of Eight’s minor censure of the Iranian regime’s savage conduct against its people, and the decision to hold off further action until September in no way suffices.
The sham election and subsequent crackdown on protests shows that pinning hope on behaviour change or moderation within a regime which has replaced people's sovereignty with the absolute rule of the Supreme leader is an illusion. The only solution is establishment of democracy and the rule of the people.
We declare our support for the call by Mrs Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, for a free UN-supervised election in Iran based on people's sovereignty.
We urge the UN Security Council and its member states to pressure the Iranian regime to accept a free UN-supervised election.
We urge the UN Security Council to suspend diplomatic and trade ties with the regime and impose a foreign travel ban on Iran's senior officials until a complete halt to the suppression.
We further call on the Security Council to refer the crimes of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to an international tribunal.
